About NYFERA

NYFERA uses visual materials to help explain New York education, identify institutions, and present public data clearly. These materials may include photographs, illustrations, school logos, charts, maps, screenshots, and interface graphics.

This page explains our standards for attribution and responsible image use. The credit accompanying an individual image identifies its source and applicable terms. This page does not replace image-specific attribution or grant permission to reuse third-party material.

Credits must identify the creator and source accurately. Depending on the material and its permissions, a credit should include the creator or rights holder, image title where supplied, original source, applicable license or permission statement, and relevant modifications.

Credits should appear beside the image, in its caption, or in a clearly identified credits section on the same page. A source link should lead to the original item or its information page where possible.

Naming a repository, search engine, or uploading account is not necessarily sufficient attribution. The original creator must receive credit when required.

Creative Commons materials must follow their specific license conditions. Creative Commons recommends the TASL approach—Title, Author, Source, and License—as a practical attribution framework. Individual licenses may impose additional requirements.

For example, CC BY 4.0 requires appropriate credit, a license link, and an indication of changes. Other licenses may restrict commercial use, adaptations, or the terms under which adaptations can be shared. These conditions must be checked before publication or modification.

Images found through Wikimedia Commons require file-level checks. The relevant file description should be reviewed for authorship, source, copyright status, license, and restrictions. Wikimedia Commons itself advises reusers to verify each image’s status. Attribution should credit the creator rather than simply naming Wikimedia.

Images found through general web searches, social media, or school websites must not be assumed available for republication. Giving credit does not, by itself, establish permission.

Public access is different from public-domain status. Publication on a government, district, or school website does not automatically establish unrestricted reuse rights. Copyright status and any relevant terms must be checked for the particular item.

Where material is identified as public domain, the supporting basis should be documented. NYFERA should still provide a source credit where practical so readers can trace its origin.

School logos and institutional marks require careful presentation. Their appearance should serve identification or relevant discussion. They must not suggest that a school, district, authorizer, or government agency endorses NYFERA.

A logo credit does not grant readers permission to reproduce the mark elsewhere. Any reuse remains subject to the rights and conditions applicable to that material.

Data graphics require both visual and data attribution. A chart created for NYFERA should identify the underlying dataset, publishing organization, reporting period, and relevant calculations. An original visualization must not be presented as an official agency graphic.

Reproduced charts, maps, and screenshots require separate consideration of their reuse terms. Cropping or annotation must not remove essential context, source information, or required notices.

Illustrations must remain distinguishable from documentary images. Stock photographs used illustratively should not imply that the people or facilities shown belong to a particular school. AI-generated images must be identified when readers could mistake them for photographs of actual institutions, students, staff, or events.

Captions must not invent identities, locations, or experiences. Image descriptions and alternative text should explain what is shown; they do not replace required attribution.

Privacy and dignity also matter. Copyright permission does not resolve every concern involving identifiable children or sensitive educational circumstances. Images must be assessed for their context and potential harm before publication.

Readers and rights holders can report missing credits, incorrect attribution, or permission concerns through our Contact Us page. Please include the NYFERA page URL, the affected image, and supporting information about the original source or rights.

Verified problems should be addressed through corrected attribution, replacement, or removal, as appropriate. Material may be temporarily withheld while a concern is reviewed.

Permission to view an image on NYFERA is not permission to reuse it. Readers should consult the item-specific credit and obtain any additional authorization required.

A clearer picture depends on good sources.
